Free Forfeit alternatives: accountability without paying twice (2026)

Upfront: I built RankUp, one of the alternatives below, and it works differently from Forfeit: no money at stake. So this is not neutral. Every price was read from the App Store or Google Play listing on the date above, and where Forfeit does not publish something, I say so rather than guess.
The short answer: if you want money on the line without a subscription, use StickK (free, you choose where a lost stake goes) or Beeminder (free core, you only pay when you derail). If what you actually want is proof that someone checks, without paying to fail, use RankUp or SendProof.
What changed with Forfeit
Forfeit is a good app with a clear idea: say what you will do, by when, and how much you lose if you do not, then prove it with a photo, timelapse, GPS, Apple Health or Screen Time. It has 4.8 stars on iOS. But its lower-rated reviews (see them here) cluster around two things.
- A subscription arrived in 2025. Reviews from May 2025 onwards describe a surprise paywall. Forfeit is free to download and sells plans from $3.99 a week or $7.99 a month on iOS, but it does not publish what the free version includes. Some reviewers say they could not set a single forfeit without paying; others say the free version allows one task at a time.
- Forfeit keeps the money you lose. Its FAQ says that, for now, forfeited money is retained by Forfeit, and that an option to send it to friends or savings is being built. Some older third-party pages still say it goes to charity; that is out of date.
Paying a subscription and then paying again when you fail is the part people push back on. Every alternative below drops one or both.
Seven options at a glance
| App | How it works | Who checks | Money? | Platforms | Price (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Forfeit | Stake money (or a text, call or app block) on a task | AI, then a human if unsure; self- or friend-verify options | Yes, and Forfeit keeps what you lose | iOS, Android, Mac, web | Free download; iOS subscriptions from $3.99/week or $7.99/mo |
| RankUp | Timed sessions with proof; your squad sees them; ranks decay if you go quiet | Your squad (can dispute) | No | iPhone, web | Free; Pro $9.99/mo or $59.99/yr |
| StickK | Commitment contract, optional stake to a friend, charity or anti-charity | A referee you pick | Optional, and you choose where it goes | Web, iOS | Free |
| Beeminder | Escalating pledge when you go off track ($0, $5, $10, $30...) | Automatic data or your own entry | Only when you derail | Web, iOS, Android | Free core; paid tiers $8 to $81/mo |
| SendProof | Send a photo or GPS proof to a friend | The friend approves or rejects | No | iOS, Android | Free; Plus $2.99/mo |
| PROVE IT | An alarm that stops only when you tap an NFC sticker where the task is | The sticker tap | No | iPhone (iOS 26+) | App free; stickers $72 for 20 |
| Proofs | One daily photo shared with friends | AI | No | iPhone | No free tier; from $9.99/mo |
If you still want money on the line
StickK is the original commitment-contract site, and it is free. You set a goal and a referee, and if you add a stake you choose where it goes: a friend, a charity, or an "anti-charity" you would hate to fund. The catch is the app: 2.6 stars on iOS, with reviewers describing it as glitchy.
Beeminder charges nothing until you go off track, then escalates ($0, $5, $10, $30 and up) so each failure costs more. It is strongest for anything measurable and can log data automatically. By default you can appeal a charge on the honor system, so the money only truly bites in its No-Excuses Mode.
If you want proof without paying to fail
Here is the uncomfortable part of the money approach: most people do not want it. In a study of 2,538 people, 90% accepted a reward-based programme but only 13.7% accepted one where they put their own money down (Halpern et al., NEJM 2015). In a well-known smoking study, only 11% took up a commitment contract, and while it helped, most who signed still did not quit (Giné, Karlan and Zinman, 2010).
RankUp (mine) swaps money for people. You start a timed session for anything (gym, study, deep work), finish it with a photo or video, and your squad sees it and can dispute it. Your rank decays if you go quiet, which stings without costing a cent. On RankUp, 82% of 1,549 sessions got a reaction from another member within a day (my own account excluded), so someone really is watching.
SendProof is a new, simple version of the same idea: send a photo or GPS proof to one friend who approves or rejects it. It is free with an optional $2.99 a month plan, but it is very new, with only a handful of ratings.
PROVE IT is a clever physical take: an alarm that only stops when you tap an NFC sticker placed where the task happens, so you have to get up and go there. The app is free but the stickers cost $72 for 20, it needs iOS 26 or later, and it launched this month.
Proofs shares one AI-checked daily photo with friends, but it has no free tier and has not been updated since June 2025.
Where RankUp is the wrong choice
- Losing money is the only thing that works for you. Use StickK or Beeminder.
- You want proof checked automatically from your phone or watch. Forfeit can verify from Apple Health and Screen Time, and Beeminder logs data from dozens of apps.
- You have nobody to share it with. You can join an open squad, but RankUp works best with people who know you.
- You are on Android and want a native app. RankUp runs in the browser on Android while the Play Store app is in testing.
The short version
- Money on the line, free, you choose where it goes: StickK.
- Pay only when you fail, for measurable goals: Beeminder.
- Proof your friends check, no money, any habit: RankUp.
- One friend approves one photo: SendProof.
Questions
Is there a free alternative to Forfeit?
Yes. StickK is free and lets you put an optional stake on a goal that goes to a charity, a friend or an anti-charity you choose. Beeminder's core plan is free and only charges you when you go off track. If you want accountability without money, RankUp and SendProof are free and use proof checked by friends instead.
Is Forfeit free?
Forfeit is free to download and sells subscriptions, starting at $3.99 a week or $7.99 a month on iOS. It does not publish what the free version includes; some reviewers say they could not set a forfeit without subscribing, and others say the free version allows one task at a time.
Where does the money go when you fail on Forfeit?
According to Forfeit's own FAQ, for now it is retained by Forfeit, and the company says it is building an option to send it to friends or your own savings. On StickK you choose where the money goes, including a charity or an anti-charity.
Do money-at-stake accountability apps work?
For the people who choose them, they can. In a study of about 2,000 smokers, those offered a commitment contract were 3 percentage points more likely to pass a test at six months. But only around 11 to 14% of people offered a money-at-stake contract agree to one, and many who do still fail.
Is there an accountability app with proof that does not take your money?
Yes. RankUp ends every session with a photo or video that your squad can see and dispute, SendProof sends your proof to a friend to approve, and Proofs shares a daily photo with friends. None of them charge you for failing.
