Habitica alternatives: what to use when the game stops working (2026)

Upfront: I built RankUp, one of the alternatives below, and it borrows ideas Habitica made popular (XP, ranks, playing with friends). So this is not neutral. Every price was checked against the app's own listing on the date above, and I say where RankUp is the wrong pick, including for most people who love Habitica's RPG side.
The short answer: pick the alternative that fixes the reason you are leaving. Missing the community: RankUp, Daily Pact or Habit Huddle. Tired of an honor system you can cheat: RankUp (photo proof) or Habitify and Streaks (Apple Health data). Worn down by the punishment: Finch. Want an even deeper RPG: LifeUp on Android.
Why people leave Habitica
Habitica is still updated and still loved: 4.3 stars from about 3,500 ratings on the App Store and 4.6 from about 76,000 on Google Play. Reading its lower-rated App Store reviews, three reasons come up again and again (see the reviews):
- Bugs and sync problems. The most common complaint by far, from reminders that break across devices to updates that leave the app "almost unusable".
- The community left with the guilds. Habitica closed the Tavern and guilds on 8 August 2023, saying they were used by a small share of players and that new online safety laws required moderation it had not provided. One long-time player wrote that the guilds "were the soul of this app".
- Punishment and paywalls. Losing HP or levels when you are sick, and quests or items locked behind gems.
There is also the problem Habitica has always had: nothing is verified. You tick your own dailies, so the game only works for as long as you stay honest with yourself.
Nine options at a glance
| App | How it works | Friends | Verified? | Platforms | Price (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Habitica | RPG: XP and gold, missed dailies cost HP | Parties up to 30; guilds and Tavern closed in 2023 | No | Web, iOS, Android | Free; $4.99/mo or $47.99/yr |
| RankUp | Timed sessions earn XP; ranks E to S; rank decays if you go quiet | Squads of any size, weekly board | Photo or video proof every session | iPhone, web | Free; Pro $9.99/mo or $59.99/yr |
| Finch | A virtual pet grows as you look after yourself | Friends and "good vibes" | No | iOS, Android | Free; Finch Plus optional |
| LifeUp | Build your own RPG: skills, coins, a reward shop | Team up or challenge friends | No | Android (iOS sibling "ulives" sold separately) | $4.99 once |
| Do It Now | RPG to-do list: tasks raise skills | None | No | Android | Free with ads |
| Habitify | Clean tracker that pulls from Health, Strava, Screen Time | Challenges, leaderboards | Partly (connected data) | Apple, Android, web | Free for 3 habits; paid tiers |
| Streaks | Up to 24 tasks; keep the streak alive | Share a task with other Streaks users | Partly (Health-linked tasks) | Apple only | $5.99 once |
| Daily Pact | One-tap check-in with your pact | Groups | No | iOS, Android | Trial, then $0.99/mo or $9.99/yr |
| Forest | A tree grows while you stay off your phone | Plant Together | Only that your phone stayed down | iOS, Android, browser | Free; Plus from $5.99/mo |
If you miss the community
RankUp (mine) keeps the parts of Habitica that worked socially (XP, ranks, a group that sees what you do) and drops the avatar. You start a timed session for anything (gym, study, reading, deep work), finish it with a photo or video, and climb from E to S rank. Squads have no size limit, compete on a weekly board, and see every session. Your rank decays if you go quiet, but never below the highest rank you have held.
Daily Pact and Habit Huddle are newer, smaller apps built around groups checking in each day. They are actively updated but have very few ratings so far, and neither verifies anything.
If the honor system stopped working
Habitica trusts a tap. On RankUp, every session ends with proof your squad can see and dispute. In practice disputes are rare: of 1,470 proofed sessions on RankUp, 12 have ever been disputed by a squad-mate.
Habitify and Streaks take a different route: they can complete habits automatically from Apple Health, Strava or Screen Time, so walking, workouts and phone limits do not depend on your word. Streaks is a $5.99 one-time purchase; Habitify is free for three habits.
If the punishment wore you down
Finch is the opposite of Habitica's HP loss: a small pet grows as you look after yourself, and nothing bad happens when you have a hard day. With 4.9 stars from over 750,000 ratings, it is the most loved app in this list. The trade-off is that there is no consequence at all, which is exactly why it works for some people and not for others.
If you want more RPG, not less
LifeUp lets you design your own game: skills, coins, a shop of real-life rewards and loot boxes. It is Android only, as a $4.99 one-time purchase; its iPhone sibling, ulives, is a separate app and reviewers say data does not sync between them. Do It Now is a simpler free RPG to-do list on Android. (An iPhone app with the same name is from a different developer and is poorly rated.)
Where RankUp is the wrong choice
- You love the avatar, gear and boss fights. RankUp has ranks, not a character. Stay with Habitica or try LifeUp.
- You use Habitica as a to-do list. RankUp tracks timed sessions, not tasks.
- You want something gentle. Rank decay is designed to sting. Finch will serve you better.
- You are on Android and want a native app. RankUp works in the browser on Android while the Play Store app is in testing.
The short version
- Miss the community, want friends to see real proof: RankUp.
- Want small daily check-ins with a group: Daily Pact.
- Want habits verified by Apple Health: Habitify or Streaks.
- Need something kind: Finch.
- Want a deeper, build-your-own RPG: LifeUp (Android).
Questions
What is the best Habitica alternative?
It depends on why you are leaving. If you miss the community, RankUp or Daily Pact put you in a group with friends again. If the honor system stopped working, RankUp needs photo proof and Habitify or Streaks pull data from Apple Health. If the punishment wore you down, Finch is the gentle option. If you want an even deeper RPG, LifeUp on Android.
Is there a Habitica alternative with friends?
Yes. RankUp puts friends in squads of any size that see every session with proof, Daily Pact and Habit Huddle are built around small groups checking in, and Finch lets friends send each other encouragement.
Why did Habitica remove guilds?
Habitica closed the Tavern and guilds on 8 August 2023. Its FAQ gives two reasons: they were used by a disproportionately small share of players, and new online safety laws required content oversight for public spaces that Habitica had not historically provided.
Is there a Habitica alternative that stops cheating?
Most gamified apps run on the honor system. RankUp asks for a photo or video at the end of every session that your squad can see and dispute, and Habitify and Streaks can complete habits automatically from Apple Health data.
Is there a free Habitica alternative?
Finch, Forest, Do It Now and RankUp all have free versions, and Habitify is free for up to three habits. LifeUp and Streaks are one-time purchases rather than subscriptions.
RankUp is free on iPhone and the web. See how it works. More: gamified fitness apps compared and accountability apps with friends.
